Members of the public are urged to gather in Independence Square on Monday, March 8, for a rally and concert to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The event is being hosted by the Bureau of Gender Affairs and will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Performers will include John King, TC, Natahlee, Dancin’ Africa and Drama Konnections.

This year’s theme for the day is "Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All".

Two outstanding Barbadian women will be honoured during the night.?? In addition, there will also be inspirational speeches from a number of women, including former Member of Parliament for St. Joseph, Maizie Barker-Welch; and former Assistant Director of Sports at the National Sports Council, Kathy Harper-Hall. They will speak about their successes and challenges in their areas of endeavour.

International Women’s Day is observed annually on March 8, to highlight the economic, political and social achievements of women. The idea to commemorate the day was put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid industrialisation and economic expansion which led to protests over working conditions.

The celebrations dwindled in the 1930s, but were revived by the rise of feminism in the 1960s.????saustin@barbados.gov.bb
