Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley??

The Royal Barbados Police Force has been commended by Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, for its contribution to the nation’s youth, and sports, in general.

He was at the time delivering the feature address at a track meet held at the National Stadium last Saturday. The sports day was part of the Force’s celebration of its 175th year of service, to be officially recognised on December 15.??

Mr. Lashley hailed the police officers for their success in honing some of the finest sports men and women of the Caribbean, including the late Henderson Bascombe, Pearson Trotman, Keith Miller, Adrian Johnson, Jeffrey Howell, Frank Blackman, Lybron Sobers, Basil Cox, Jan Wickham and Wesley Browne.

"I encourage you to continue the legacy of past athletes who started at these games and subsequently, excelled at the regional and international level… I am sure that your recommencement of these games will be conducive to the further development of sports in Barbados and hence, the Ministry of Youth, Family and Sports is fully supportive of this worthwhile endeavour," the Minister stated.

He also applauded the contribution of the Police Force’s Boys and Girls Club in Bay Street for affording the youth of Barbados "an avenue through which they can develop their talents in the field of sports".??

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police and Chairman of the 175th Anniversary celebrations committee, Oral Williams, the sports meet was last held in 2006 as a result of growing demands on the Force.??

This year saw participation of the Force’s Northern, Southern and Bridgetown Divisions, Operation and Administrative Support, the Regional Police Training Centre and the Criminal Investigation Division. Also taking part were members of the Barbados Masters and Seniors Athletics Club, the Prison Service and visiting teams representing the Grenada, Guyana, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago Police Forces.

The Bridgetown Division was judged by Minister Lashley as the best team on parade.??lbayley@barbados.gov.bb
