Real estate agents and dealers of precious metals and stones, including jewellery store owners, are invited to learn more about Anti-Money Laundering/Counter Financing of Terrorism through two free seminars.

The workshop for dealers of precious metals and stones, including jewellery store owners, will take place on Wednesday, March 19, from 10:00 a.m. until noon, while the one for real estate agents will take place the following day, Thursday, March 20, from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m.

Both seminars will be held in the Training Room of the Insurance Corporation of Barbados, Perry Gap, Roebuck Street, St. Michael, and parking is available at the Police Sport Complex, Weymouth, Roebuck Street, St. Michael.

Hosted by the Financial Intelligence Unit, the seminars are aimed at educating real estate agents and dealers of precious metals and stones about the international requirements for the implementation of anti-money laundering/counter financing of terrorism measures.??The sessions are open to all real estate members, including non-members of the Barbados Estate Agents and Valuers Association, and all dealers of precious metals and stones.

Interested persons are asked to register on or before Monday, March 17, by calling telephone number 436-4734/5, or by emailing fiu@barbadosfiu.gov.bb.??The seminar will focus on experiences in establishing a national anti-money laundering/counter financing of terrorism r??gime for local real estate agencies and dealers of precious metals and stones.

This includes examining the potential for blacklisting a country due to inadequate measures and the effects this could have on businesses and citizens; and looking at how on-site examinations are conducted and the implementation of sanctions in accordance with the legislation.

The seminars will also examine what is in accordance with the legislation, and how real estate agents or dealers in precious metals and stones may be unwittingly used as vehicles for money laundering or terrorist financing. Presenters for the seminars include Director of the FIU and Attorney-at-law, Shelly Nicholls-Hunte; Inspector of the Bahamas Compliance Commission, Stephen Thompson; and Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit in Trinidad and Tobago, Susan Francois.
