The Ministry of Agriculture is seeking to ensure that food crop farmers glean a greater appreciation of agriculture as a "business", especially given the changing trends within the sector.

Record Keeping for Profitability is the theme of two seminars slated to be held at the Public Library in Speighstown, St. Peter and the Barbados Workers’ Union Labour College, Mangrove, St. Philip, tomorrow, Tuesday, December 7, and Wednesday, December 8,?? respectively.

??The sessions will be conducted from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. each evening.???? Chief Agricultural Officer, Barton Clarke, will deliver opening remarks at the first seminar, slated to be held tomorrow, at the Speightstown Public Library.

The aim of these workshops will be to instill a greater level of appreciation within the farming community for agriculture as a business, through more efficient data collection and records keeping; farm planning; generating financial information and estimating farm profitability for crop production.??

According to the Ministry, there is general agreement that the changing trends in the agricultural sector are expected to continue into the future. It is, therefore, expedient that farmers increase the effectiveness of their existing operations, thereby reducing costs, while at the same time considering ways to improve total farm income.?? The seminars will also introduce local farmers to the Ministry’s Farm Management Manual for crops as developed by regional Consultant, Dr. Bernard Francois.

Among topics to be discussed are: the importance of Farm Management; Data Collection & Data Entry and Costing and Break-even analysis. The sessions will also examine Critical Inputs in Farm Operations.??cgaskin@barbados.gov.bb
