Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones (FP)

Volunteerism has become taboo in today’s society.

This was the view expressed by Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones, as he addressed the Barbados Red Cross 2010 Youth Links Enrolment Ceremony, at the Lester Vaughan School, last Friday.

The Minister lauded the organisation for its excellent work and its deep commitment to "saving lives and communities, and maintaining and restoring human dignity." He also acknowledged the vital role the Red Cross had played as one of the key advocates of volunteerism. Mr. Jones said: "Its operations are without fanfare … without bells and whistles and away from the glare of cameras. Nevertheless, if there is something to be said about the Red Cross Society, it must be that it is an organisation that is purpose driven, effective, efficient and sure."

Minister Jones commended the young members for their involvement in an organisation which provides them with structure, positive social norms and opportunities for skill enhancement.

"I believe Barbados must feel some measure of indebtedness to this institution, because of its vested interest in the youth. It has been proven that participation in the activities of community-based organisations, such as this, is beneficial to their personal development… We need to actively cultivate a generation of caring and experienced citizens, who know the value of volunteering their time and energy for the betterment of mankind," the Education Minister asserted.

Mr. Jones also called for the establishment of the Red Cross movement within the Primary Schools, suggesting that there should be no age limit for volunteerism.
