This region???s fashion design sector will be in the spotlight when a two-day seminar entitled: The Apparel Industry and Economic Development in the Caribbean: Efficient Planning and Allocation of Resources will be held on Thursday, August 14 and Friday, August 15, beginning at 9:00 a.m. each day, at the Hilton Barbados.

The workshop will be facilitated by the Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) through the SELA-SMEs Programme, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization in collaboration with the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) and the Embassy of Barbados in Caracas, Venezuela.

Its mission is to equip the fashion design sector in the CARICOM region with the elements to develop the industry in the Caribbean; review African, Caribbean, Latin American and European experiences in the apparel industry; sensitise the private sector about the economic potential of the apparel industry with a view to stimulating greater investor support while coming up with proposals to strengthen the strategies employed by the business, financial and academic sectors in accessing international markets.

The opening session, on Thursday August 14, will be addressed by Chief Executive Officer at the BIDC, Dr. Leroy McClean while representative from SELA, Avis Charles, fashion consultant of Avis Charles Associates, is the lead presenter.

The target audience will include training institutions specialising in fashion and fashion design, the manufacturing sector, business development agencies, financing/development institutions and umbrella private sector bodies.
