Parents who are desirous of having their children attend Camp Connections during the Easter vacation may now register them at the Ministry of Youth, Family and Sports, Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road, St. Michael.

That is the word from Youth Projects Co-ordinator, David Denny, who said parents would also have the opportunity to register their children at the National Youth Expo, which will be held in Queen’s Park on Saturday, March 28, beginning at 10:00 a.m, or on the first day of camp, Monday, March 30, at the various camp locations.

There will be 47 camps spread across the island at some public schools, community centres and pavilions, for children four to 15 years old. They will run from Monday, March 30, to Thursday, April 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Camp Connections is being organised by the Ministry of Youth, Family and Sports, in collaboration with the Barbados Youth Development Council, and has as its theme “Making Dreams a Reality”. All campers will be exposed to a number of topics, including children’s rights, money matters, tourism, Barbadian history, HIV/AIDS, character building and agriculture.

Further information may be obtained by calling the Ministry of Youth, Family and Sports at 430-2813.

The camp forms part of the new initiative announced by Prime Minister David Thompson last year in the Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals.

Mr. Thompson promised that Government would establish a National Camp Programme to ensure young children were supervised in camps during the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays.

“Our young children are most vulnerable to undesirable attention from others who mean them no good and are more likely to be tempted into trouble during the long periods during school holidays, when many children are idle…

“This Programme will bring our young children under the good influence of our outstanding retired citizens and will help our teenagers to develop a sense of duty towards their juniors. We also want to create a cadre of community leaders who believe in sacrifice above self and to bridge the generation gap between our teenagers and authority figures,” Mr. Thompson stated.

The Prime Minister expressed the view that the programme would provide an opportunity for training teenagers in counselling, activities management and execution.
