"Renew dog licences now!"??

This is the advice from the Animal Control Officer, Curtis Thompson, who is reminding the public that under the Dogs (Licensing and Control) Act 1981-13, a licence is valid for a period of 12 months from the date of issue.

According to Mr. Thompson, the Centre had been sending reminders to owners since January of this year, but to no avail. "Persons are not coming in to have their dogs licensed as they should, particularly in the parishes of St. Peter, St. Lucy, St. Andrew and St. John," he said.

Dog owners, who pay twice the amount of the prescribed fee, will be entitled to a valid licence for three years.

A licence is renewable within a month after the date of its expiry.

Any person who fails without reasonable excuse to comply is guilty of an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $100 or imprisonment for one month, or both.

Licences for dogs may be obtained from the Animal Control Centre in Black Rock, Six Roads Polyclinic in St. Philip and the Maurice Byer Polyclinic in St. Peter. Members of the public can also have these animals licensed when the Hope Martin mobile unit, working in conjunction with the Animal Control Centre and environmental health officers visit their community.

Meanwhile, persons with disabilities or shut-ins are asked to contact the Centre at 425-5559 in order to make arrangements for licensing or renewal of dog licences.
