Prime Minister Freundel Stuart

The Ellerton Day Nursery, Ellerton, St. George, will be renamed the Geoffrey Morris Day Nursery during a ceremony on Saturday, November 17, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart will deliver the feature address, while Minister of Labour and Social Security, Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo and Minister of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, will give brief remarks.

The late Geoffrey Morris was born on November 17, 1947.?? He was first employed by the Child Care Board as a temporary Assistant Houseparent on June 19, 1978, and later appointed to that post on July 1, 1979. Mr. Morris was then assigned to the post of Peripatetic Houseparent on March 24, 1986 and was seconded six years later to the Ministry of Education on September 15, 1992, where he became a School Attendance Officer.

During his distinguished tenure with the Board, in the capacity of Peripatetic Houseparent, Mr. Morris developed many instrumental programmes at the Glendale, Newcastle, Stirling and Farrs Children’s Homes. These programmes included agricultural projects which produced pigs and turkeys, as well as various root and leafy vegetables.

They were in keeping with his role, which was to work with adolescents; perform the role of father/parental figure and counsellor in matters affecting their personal lives; assisting children with finding suitable employment; assisting with the integration of children into the community; and making follow-up visits with youth who faced problems within the community.

Mr. Morris, a resident of St. George from 1987, continued his community spiritedness, by assisting, voluntarily, as Director of the St. George Summer Day Camps from 1988 to 1989, and Camp Leader of the Ellerton, St. George Summer Day Camp in 1990.

He leaves behind a legacy of hard-work, commitment and dedication to the community which can only be emulated by those who are willing to work with and assist disadvantaged children within their own communities towards enriching their lives.
