Minister with responsibility for Energy, Senator Darcy Boyce, has announced the proposed formation of a task force to assist in revising the renewable energy policy for Barbados.

Speaking at a ceremony hosted by the Barbados Renewable Energy Association (BREA) last Thursday, Senator Boyce said the Task Force would also be charged with developing the roadmap for executing the policy. Further details would be announced within the next two weeks, he added.

The Energy Minister said it was important to keep the momentum going in respect of renewable energy and energy efficiency, despite the fact that the price of oil was falling.

These efforts, he explained, would go a long way in reducing the $700 million fuel bill that Barbados faced annually, and consequently, made a significant impact on the island???s economic growth.

He revealed that Government was already reaping some success, and the current expectation was that 40 to 50 per cent of electricity produced in Barbados would be generated from renewable energy sources by the year 2020.

Senator Boyce further disclosed that a proposed study would explore the use of the sea for energy generation and there was also a pilot project in the works to introduce electric vehicles within the public service.

He assured the audience that Government would continue to work to ensure the smooth operation of the incentives already introduced and he lauded BREA for producing the solar consumer guide handbook which was launched at the event.
