Security Guards, Security Guard Agencies and Private Investigators have been reminded that their licences will expire on December 31, and should be renewed by January 31.

Section 17 Clause 2 (c) and (d) of the Private Investigators and Security Guards Act, CAP.372 E, states: "A licence is subject to the terms and conditions as are specified in the licence and is renewable in the month of January in each year upon application to the Board in the approved form and on payment of the prescribed fee".

Furthermore, the Act indicates that no one may provide services as a Private Investigator or Security Guard, or operate an agency engaged in the business of providing the services of private investigators or security guards, unless that person has the appropriate licence.

In addition, anyone who contravenes subsection one of this law will be guilty of an offence, and if convicted, may be fined $5,000, or imprisoned for two years or both.

A Police Certificate of Character, which will be valid for a period of six months, must be submitted with the application renewal.

Non-nationals applying for, or renewing licences must provide documentation verifying that they are a resident or citizen of Barbados, or have a work permit which allows them to work as a Security Guard.

For more details, persons may contact the Defence and Security Division, Weymouth Corporate Centre, corner of Roebuck Street and Country Road, or telephone 436-6435.
