All private investigators, security guard agencies and security guards have been reminded that their licences, which expired on Saturday, December 31, 2011, must be renewed no later than Tuesday, January 31.

This stipulation is in accordance with Section 17 clauses 2 (c) and (d) of the Private Investigators and Security Guards Act CAP.372E.?? It states: "A licence is subject to the terms and conditions as are specified in the licence and is renewable in the month of January each year, upon application to the Board in approved form and on payment of the prescribed fee."

According to the Security Guards Act, persons who fail to renew their licences, but continue to provide security services, will be liable on conviction to a fine of $5 000 or imprisonment for two years, or both.

A valid certificate of character on an approved form must be submitted with each application for renewal.

Additionally, non-nationals applying for or renewing licences must provide documentation verifying that they are residents or citizens of Barbados, or have a work permit which allows them to work as a security guard.
