Minister of Small Business Development, Donville Inniss. (FP)

Many persons are unaware of the severe challenges small businesses face to stay afloat but this country’s Minister of Small Business Development, Donville Inniss, is calling for a greater appreciation of the struggles they experience.

Addressing the Small Business Association’s (SBA) awards ceremony and reception at Radisson Aquatica Resort, the Minister said Barbadians were not aware of the “struggles to pay National Insurance, National Social Responsibility Levy, Value Added Tax and all those things”.

He continued: “Sometimes our own employees do not appreciate what you have to go through to make their wages on a Friday afternoon; they don’t see the struggle.  To those like Senator [John] Watson and others who have stayed the course, in many respects, you are the unsung heroes of Barbados.”

Mr. Inniss urged small business owners to ignore the detractors and stay the course, focus on building up their businesses and to think big.

“Do not think of your business ending when you have ended.  But, let your business be one that can continue for generations to come.  Also, let your businesses be one that you can take outside of Barbados to the wider world.”
