Every year, the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHR) honours its retired stalwarts by presenting commemorative tokens in the form of gift baskets or plaques.

This year, as part of celebrations to mark 50 years of universal free public education (1962-2012) and in keeping with its theme: Celebrating 50 Years of Universal Free Public Education, persons who have made a significant contribution to the sector, within this time frame, will be recognised.

Among the first expected to receive the token of appreciation from the Ministry will be Dr. Dan Carter, an outstanding educator, who fulfilled the roles of teacher, Principal, Education Officer and Senior Education Officer.

He retired from the Ministry of Education in 2007, in the latter post.?? It was there that his analytical skills were brought to the attention of all as he headed the Planning and Development Unit.

In addition, Dr. Carter was instrumental in producing chronicles of the history of education in Barbados.??These insightful publications are still widely utilised by MEHR’s staff and the public.

Dr. Carter, the educator, also views social responsibility seriously.??He has given back to his communities of Thornbury Hill and Oistins in Christ Church.??He has Chaired the Oistins Fish Festival since its inception, thus earning him the title; ???Mayor of Oistins’.

Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones, will present the plaque to Dr. Carter at his residence in Thornbury Hill, Christ Church, tomorrow, Thursday, October 25, at 9:00 a.m.
