The Family Unit within the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development has under its aegis, a programme designed to assist children who have experienced the trauma of natural disasters, conflicts or violence.

Return to Happiness is the name of the psycho-social recovery programme which aims to aid children between the ages of five and 12 in the immediate period following their traumatic experience.

To ensure that members of this island’s emergency response agencies have the necessary information to assist in the execution of the programme, the Unit hosted a training workshop last Friday, to sensitise stakeholders about the importance of the initiative.

The half-day workshop was attended by representatives of The Royal Barbados Police Force, the Barbados Defence Force, the Barbados Red Cross, the Community Development Department, the Constituency Councils, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Department of Emergency Management and the District Emergency Organisations.

The Return to Happiness Programme was introduced by UNICEF, and has been implemented in other countries including Mozambique, Colombia, Venezuela, Belize, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
