The National Housing Corporation (NHC) has issued a request for proposals (RFPs) for affordable climate and weather resilient housing designs.

This disclosure has come from Planner at the NHC, Raymond Lorde, who said interested persons should send their proposals to the General Manager of the Corporation by Monday, November 25.

Mr. Lorde explained that the NHC had been mandated to secure designs for resilient houses for its affordable housing programme. “Given the intensity of weather events produced by the very real impact of climate change, it is critical that the future housing stock be designed to mitigate against the worst effects of impending events.

“The affordable housing programme is banded into low income and middle-income houses and it is expected that in each band, at least four designs suited to the income bracket will be produced,” he said.

He added that the corporation was interested in designs that utilize modern design technologies and materials that have proven or rated resilience against Category 3 to 5 storm events and a geologic or earthquake hazard; comply with the Barbados Building Code or an appropriate best practice guideline; and allow for the incorporation of any relevant principles and ideas relating to ‘green building’ technology, among others.

Mr. Lorde noted that the NHC, and by extension Government, was committed to ensuring that all Barbadians had access to safe, comfortable and healthy shelters in an environment that allowed for the realization of their full human potential.

For further information on the request for proposals, persons may email Mr. Lorde at raymond.lorde@nhc.gov.bb or nhcplanner@gmail.com, or click here to download the document.
