Twenty-three-year-old Trinidadian Cherrelle Dacon is the latest recipient of the Commonwealth Caribbean Rhodes Scholarship.

She was chosen from a field of seven candidates who were shortlisted and interviewed recently at Government House by the Rhodes Scholarship Committee.

The Committee, which was chaired by Governor General Sir Elliot Belgrave, also comprised former Rhodes Scholars: Barbados??? Chief Justice, Sir Marston Gibson; Peter Goldson; Rhoda Reddock; Ambassador Caren Hill; Dr Carla Noel Mendez and Bertha Liverpool Pilgrim.

In making the announcement at Government House, the Governor General congratulated Ms. Dacon, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine and is pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in the Management of HIV Infection, also at UWI, St. Augustine.

Ms. Dacon explained that she would use the scholarship to further her studies, with a view to advancing the Caribbean’s work on matters related to HIV and AIDS.
