A Barbadian is this year???s Rhodes Scholar. Chloe Walker, 22, a teacher by profession, walked away with the coveted scholarship from among five other contenders, at Government House yesterday.

Ms. Walker who impressed the judges, chaired by Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave, is currently pursuing a Masters in Philosophy at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Campus.

The emotional Rhodes Scholar said she would be pursuing a doctorate in Education at Oxford University next year. Some of her other achievements and awards include a Barbados Government Scholarship (2008) and the Duke of Edinburgh???s International Awards.

She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Literary and African Studies from the University of Toronto.

Ms. Walker said she wanted to see a number of changes in the local education system, particularly when it came to policy and the use of technology. The other candidates were from Antigua, Dominica, the Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago.
