Motorists who paid their road tax between June 12 and 30, 2018, can now request a refund from Government.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley made this disclosure on Sunday evening during an interview with veteran journalist David Ellis, at Ilaro Court.

Ms. Mottley explained that Cabinet agreed at its meeting last Thursday that those affected motorists could write the Ministry of Finance and ask for the refund.

“We can check and see when your time [for renewal] came up at BRA [Barbados Revenue Authority] and once that is verified, then the Government will give you back 75 per cent of what you paid and…will retain 25 per cent as an administrative fee. Similarly, with commercial vehicles, because they have the registration fee, [so] instead of a refund, theirs will be applied to next year’s fee,” she indicated.

Stating that the process of writing the Ministry was not new, she noted that currently, if a person’s car was involved in an accident and it was off the road for a month or two, he or she would write the Ministry of Finance and ask that a proportionate part of their road tax not be payable.

During the wide-ranging interview, Ms. Mottley said Government had been able to stabilise a lot of the immediate issues pertaining to the South Coast Sewerage Project and was on course to fixing them. She stated that the officials had identified some areas where there were breaks in the forced main.

“In addition to that, the deep injection wells are taking the sewage. They are asking people to reduce the fats, oil and grease and they have a standard operating set of procedures that are working for the most part.

“The long-term aspect is going to require that we build the second marine outfall out beyond the reefs and we are having discussions about that now with the technical players….,” she disclosed.

Stating that she expected that there would be sign off on the marine outfall, the Prime Minister added that a decision had to be reached on whether the current plant would be upgraded or a new tertiary treatment plant built. She stressed that decisions also had to be made on the Bridgetown Sewerage Project.
