Plans have been set in motion to take road tennis to the courts of the region.

This disclosure came from Minister with responsibility for Sports, Stephen Lashley, during a press conference at Kensington Oval last Friday.

Mr. Lashley explained that as his Ministry sought to further raise the profile of Barbados???s most popular indigenous game, teams have been assembled to tour selected Caribbean territories to expose them to the game and assist in setting up of Road Tennis Associations.

According to the Minister, following a successful Road Tennis workshop in December, the National Sports Council (NSC) was now seeking to implement the second phase of a plan geared towards introducing and promoting the game in seven territories.

The tours, which in total will cost an estimated Bds $70,000, will entail three days being spent in the smaller territories and up to five days in the larger Caribbean territories. The aim of the NSC is that road tennis will be aggressively pushed throughout the schools and communities of the countries.

The tours began on April 24 in St. Lucia, and will run until June 23, ending in Guyana. The Caribbean territories set to be toured are Jamaica, Guyana, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Cuba.

They are expected to assist the various Caribbean territories in preparing for the upcoming World Road Tennis Championships, which will be held in Barbados in November this year.
