Barbados and Russia have agreed to seek to improve the current relations that exist between the two countries. This was one of the areas discussed when Ambassador-designate of the Russian Federation, Nikolay Smirnov, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Freundel Stuart.

During the meeting at Ilaro Court today, the Prime Minister officially welcomed the Ambassador in his official capacity to the island and expressed the hope of fostering closer ties in a number of areas.

"We have to work on deepening the relationship with Russia…the country is regarded as a global player and we [Barbados] have to take your [Russia] significance seriously.??

In turn, Ambassador Smirnov acknowledged that although a few Russian tourists had visited the island in the past, there was a need to "see a growth in numbers".

Russia and Barbados established diplomatic ties in 1993.
