Training opportunities and the importance of tourism to a country???s development were among the areas discussed when Russian Ambassador, Nikolay Smirnov, paid a courtesy call on officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.

Permanent Secretary Charles Burnett, received the Ambassador recently on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, who was overseas on government business.

Ambassador Smirnov said Barbados was a low-crime jurisdiction and expressed the hope that both sides would see discussions in this area as a priority.

In turn, Permanent Secretary Burnett said Barbados was very keen to have deeper discussions on tourism and pointed out that ???tourism is critically important to us [Barbados]. It???s a major foreign exchange earner and, therefore, we are seeking to widen the net as far as tourists are concerned???.

The two officials also discussed a range of bilateral issues including the upcoming SIDS conference in Samoa and training opportunities for police officers.
Barbados and Russia established diplomatic ties on January 29, 1993.
