Efforts to create a healthier Barbados have been given a boost, with the recently launched Small Business Association’s (SBA) Walk the Talk campaign.

Speaking at the National Advisory Committee on Safety and Health (NACOSH) Poster and Logo Competitions awards ceremony last Friday, SBA President Dalton Medford, noted that encouraging workers to lead healthier lifestyles would not only benefit their respective entities, but their country and themselves as well.

"We all know that Barbados needs to improve its productivity…[and] we have the opportunity to make an indelible impact on our business landscape [with this programme]…

"The health of the business is the wealth of the business and to this end, we, the SBA, have partnered with the [Barbados] Chamber of Commerce [and Industry] and the [Barbados] Employers’ Confederation to implement the Walk the Talk programme…We encourage persons to be more active during the day, aim to walk at least 10 000 steps per day, which is the equivalent of 30 minutes of exercise," he said.

Mr. Medford observed that this approach would assist in making businesses more productive and competitive, through the improvement of the health and efficiency of workers.

The campaign, which started in April, saw participants complete a walk through the city, which ended with a tai chi session in Independence Square.
