The Barbados Association of Washington, D.C. Area Inc. (BAWDC), is offering scholarships to assist three Barbadians – two studying in the United States and one locally – with their studies.

The two awardees studying in the United States will each receive US $750 to assist with college expenses (tuition, books, etc.). Additionally, one awardee studying in Barbados will receive BDS $1,000.

Applicants must be Barbadian or of Barbadian heritage (i.e. at least one parent must be Barbadian); reside in the United States or Barbados; be currently enrolled in, or been accepted to a degree program, that is: an accredited two-year or four-year college in the United States, at the University of the West Indies; Barbados Community College or Erdiston Teachers’ Training College.

Interested persons should complete an application form; and write and attach an essay entitled: “A Barbadian story (personal or otherwise) that inspires me”, which must be between 750 and 1,000 words, and double spaced.

They should also submit two letters of recommendation from most recent teachers and/or employers; proof of registration for the upcoming semester (Fall 2019); the most recent official school report/transcript; a copy of the applicant’s student ID (if currently enrolled in school); and proof of Barbadian heritage (copy of Barbados ID, birth certificate or passport is needed). Failure to adhere to all of these requirements will render applications invalid.

The scholarships will be awarded based on the student’s academic achievements, essay, community involvement and educational goals.

Persons may visit the BAWDC’s website to download application forms. Applications and the required documents should be submitted by 11:59 EDT on Sunday, July 14.

Awardees will be notified no later than Sunday, July 28. BAWDC Executive committee members and their family members are not eligible to apply.
