The long-standing relationship between Barbados and Guyana was further strengthened with the presentation of scholarships to four Barbadians to pursue studies in agriculture.

High Commissioner to Guyana, Ambassador Robert Morris alluded to the historical ties between the two countries during a presentation ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last Friday.

The diplomat said: ???This is a very important and path breaking event that we are part of this morning [Friday]???because it cements that extremely good relationship that has always existed between Barbados and Guyana. Much of what is happening now exists because of the good relationship between two ministers ??? Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and our Minster Senator Maxine McClean.

??? I have seen the two of them operate within the corridors of power in several different meetings. If you see the collaboration, the mental acumen every time they have to represent the interest of the Caribbean, at the same time representing their own national interest, youwould be surprised at the level of the kind of representation that we have in the Caribbean???,??? he added.

Ambassador Morris traced the historical ties between Barbados and Guyana dating back to the 1625 when Barbados approached Guyana for Indian labour because of their knowledge about agriculture.

The High Commissioner also commended Senator McClean for the ???sterling work with her counterpart Rodrigues-Birkett ??? in maintaining the strong ties.??The four students who received awards were Warren Ashby, Tonya Ifill, Hallan Connell and Saskia Vaughan.
