“Everyone has the capacity to learn…It does not matter which school you attended.”

This was the message delivered by Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones, this morning, at the presentation of the Rotary West Scholarship to former Parkinson student, Eugine Lavine.

Commending the service organisation for its “continuing support of young people in Barbados,” Minister Jones stressed that people tend to place too much emphasis on where a child received his or her secondary education.

“If persons used to rely solely on what school they attended, this country would never have developed to the stage it is at now,” he stated.

Further highlighting the importance of the private sector to the development of the educational system, Mr. Jones explained that while the Ministry had a large role to play in the development of the island’s youth, the business sector also had a contribution to make.

“There are still many resources needed by students that are not provided by the Ministry…The input of the private sector is always relevant and timely,” he remarked.

Mr. Lavine received a $15 000 scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. He hopes to be a computer forensic scientist.
