The Biennial Schools’ Choir Competition will get under way next week with preliminary judging scheduled for February 15, 16 and 17.

Coordinator of the event and peripatetic teacher (Music) with the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Anthony Sargeant, said the competition would showcase talent, while giving the students "opportunities for creative expression and socialisation."

He added that, to date, there had been two primary schools’ choir competitions which were aimed at encouraging competitors to regard themselves not only as members of the class or school, but also of the community. The Hillaby/Turners Hall Primary School was the winner of the first competition in 2005, and Hindsbury Primary, an all girls’ school, won in 2009.

This year’s choir competition will feature primary and secondary schools and is organised to ensure that pupils sing with correct breath control, tonal quality, accuracy and expression, while improving group relationships and sharpening interpersonal skills.

There will be two stages of judging for the competition, where 560 students are expected to participate. Preliminaries will be held for over 25 primary schools and these will be at the St. Michael School Hall on Tuesday, February 15; the Alexandra School Hall on Wednesday, February 16; and the Princess Margaret Secondary School Hall on Thursday, February 17. Each session starts at 10:00 a.m.

The four entries from the secondary schools will go directly to the finals of the competition, which comes off at the Wildey Gymnasium on Sunday, March 6, from 3:00 p.m.??
