School children will be taking to the streets tomorrow, Thursday, June 18, in two separate events to commemorate Environment Month which has as its theme:?? ???Living Sustainably…Achieving A Green Economy’.

???De Heart Uh Barbados’ inaugural ???Junior Run’, organised by the Natural Heritage Department (NHD), gets under way at 10:00 a.m. from its grounds at Sturges, St. Thomas. The Environmental Protection Department’s Garrison Secondary School Hike through ???The Whim’ Gully, starts at 10:00 a.m. from the car park at the Maurice?? Byer Polyclinic, Ashton Hall, St. Peter.

The route for the Junior Run, which targets both primary and secondary school students, is from the NHD through Allen View, Sturges, Carrington’s Village, Vault Road, Welchman Hall and back to the NHD.

The race for primary school students under 11 years old will be less than two kilometres, while the one for secondary school students is approximately five kilometres. Team, individual, and age-group prizes will be awarded for this event.

Meanwhile, approximately 50 Geography and Science students from the Garrison Secondary School are expected to participate in the hike.

According to the EPD’s Environmental Technical Officer, Lisa Senhouse, the department organises at least one event for its adopted school during the annual Environment Month celebrations. She explained that the hike was chosen to give the students "more exposure, especially to the island’s natural environment".
