Schools will play their part in the Queen???s Baton Relay this week as it journeys from Government House to the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA), Wildey, St. Michael.

Students of the nursery, primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, situated along the routes which the Baton will take, will line these streets on Thursday, March 6, to welcome and cheer on the officials carrying the Baton, including icons in sports and culture.

The road relay will start at the Governor General???s residence the same morning following the official Baton handover from 10:00 a.m. President of the BOA, Steve Stoute, will pass the Baton to the first carrier, British High Commissioner, Victoria Dean. Each individual will travel for about 400 metres.

The Baton will continue on Government Hill and travel past Springer Memorial, Charles F Broome Memorial Primary, Barbados Community College, the National Sports Council, St. Giles Primary, George Lamming, St. Winifred’s, Wilkie Cumberbatch, Irving Wilson School and Luther Thorne Memorial on its way to the Barbados Olympic Association.

Over 25 students from these schools, dressed in special T-shirts bearing the insignia of the Commonwealth and the Queen???s Baton Relay will, along with their teachers, wave flags and cheer on the runner/walker as the baton passes.

There will be a stop at the St. Giles Primary School, Ivy, St. Michael, for about 10 to 15 minutes to allow for media interaction with some students from the school, its student council and sports team.

Members of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the BOA will journey to the Christ Church Foundation School Church Hill, Christ Church, on Friday, March 7 to interact with the school???s football team. This is the school of world junior gold medalist, Tia Adana Belle and the Prime Minister of Barbados, Freundel Stuart.

Additionally, they will undertake an island tour on that day that will include stops at Hillaby-Turners Hall, St. Thomas and St. Elizabeth Primary school in St. Joseph.??The Queen???s Baton Relay is a unique tradition that provides everyone with the opportunity to be part of the countdown to the Commonwealth Games, which will be held this year from July 23 to August 3.??

The Baton arrives in Barbados on Wednesday March 5, and leaves on Saturday, March 8. The BOA is expected to receive the Baton and oversee its safety while on the island.The CGF is expecting that the Baton will be photographed widely with Barbadians and at various landmarks across the island.
