The selfless contribution of the seafarer to the world???s economy will be honoured this Saturday, September 21, during a special awards ceremony and cruise hosted by the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport.

The event will be held on the Wickham/Lewis Boardwalk, opposite Carlisle House, The City, starting at 4:30 p.m., as part of the activities for Maritime Week which has as its theme: Sustainable Maritime Development. It will run from September 21 to 27.??

Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Richard Sealy, will deliver remarks and present awards to Captain George Fergusson, for his role in the island???s maritime development and infrastructure. Richard ???Dirt??? Holder, will be recognised posthumously for bravery in exceptional circumstances and Louis Holder, for his work in the development of the seafaring industry.

Additionally, student of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, Rhyan Hackett, will be awarded for outstanding performance in Maritime Studies. Following the official ceremony, there will be a cruise onboard the Jolly Roger starting at 6:00 p.m.

The Day of the Seafarer is observed every year on June 25 and presents a unique opportunity to raise awareness among the population about the vital role seafarers play in developing the world economy.
