The second Humanitarian Awards Ceremony will see over 6,000 Barbadians being honoured by Government for their efforts to ensure the health and well-being of Barbadians at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Frontline workers from the public and private sectors, the media and charitable organisations will be recognised for their yeoman service during the ceremony on Sunday, November 20, at Kensington Oval, starting at 10:00 a.m. This represents approximately 13,000 Barbadians who have been recognised.

The event is by invitation only and will be televised via the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation, and streamed on various online platforms.

Four categories of awards will be presented during the one-and-a-half-hour long ceremony. They are:

  • The Honourary Freedom of Barbados Award – to be presented to Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr. Carissa Etienne, for her leadership Team and friendship to Barbados during the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic;
  • Humanitarian Medals – will be conferred on frontline workers in essential services who, at great risk to their personal health and safety, contributed to the control and management of the local, community and national spread of COVID-19.
  • Humanitarian Lapel Pins – will be presented to persons who worked in supporting roles on the frontline in essential services and who provided support to the national COVID-19 response effort thereby stemming local, community and national spread.
  • Humanitarian Plaques – in appreciation of the generous donations of countries and organisations to the Government and People of Barbados to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley will address the ceremony, and President of Barbados, Her Excellency the Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason, is expected to present the Honourary Freedom of Barbados Award.

Director of PAHO, Dr. Carissa Etienne, will specially recognise the contributions of workers from the private and public sectors and other non-governmental organisation partners who worked tirelessly on the frontlines or in supporting roles behind the scenes to control the spread of COVID-19 in Barbados.

There will be entertainment by local artistes. A special ‘Park and Ride’ system, operated by the Transport Board, will be in place to provide transportation for awardees and their guests.
