A new textbook entitled Disaster Matters will soon be added to the libraries of several secondary schools on the island.
Thanks to co-editor of the text, Dr. Yvonne Weekes, author and lecturer at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, who will present 336 of the texts to 12 secondary schools in a brief ceremony at the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road, St. Michael, on Friday, April 29.
Education Minister, Kay McConney, will address the ceremony, along with Chief Education Officer, Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw and Dr. Weekes.
There will also be readings by Dr. Weekes and Mr. Nathan Gibbons of their work featured in the text.
The secondary schools, which will each receive 28 books, are: The St. Michael School; Alleyne; The Lodge; Christ Church Foundation; St. Leonard’s Boys’; Springer Memorial; Combermere; Deighton Griffith; Parkinson Memorial; Alexandra; Graydon Sealy and Grantley Adams Memorial.
The principal and one senior student representative of the respective secondary school have been invited to receive the books.
Disaster Matters is written around the themes of “natural disasters” and “climate change”, and features submissions from authors, including Anthony Hinkson, Kerry Belgrave, Robert E. Sandiford, Nathan Gibbons and Dr. Weekes, among others.
Considered a useful educational resource by the Ministry, its contents offer schools an inter-disciplinary approach that can cover a range of disciplines like English A and B, Social Studies, Geography, and Science.
