Security guards, private investigators and security guard agencies are reminded that they must renew their licences by Wednesday, January 31, 2018, since the current ones will expire on Sunday, December 31.

In addition, they are advised that the Private Investigators and Security Guards Licencing and Advisory Board has updated its database system. As a result of the upgrade, all security guards and private investigators renewing or applying for new licences are required to have their photographs taken digitally on arrival at Defence and Security, Prime Minister’s Office, Weymouth Corporate Centre, Roebuck Street, St. Michael.

Security Officer in Defence and Security, Earl Deane, said no person may offer services as a private investigator or security guard, or operate an agency providing those services, unless licensed under the Act.

Mr. Deane stressed that any person who contravenes the Act “is guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of $5,000, or imprisonment of two years or both”.

According to him, a valid Police Certificate of Character must be submitted with the renewal application.  However, he reminded persons that the Police Certificate of Character is valid for a period of six months after the issue date.

Non-nationals applying for or renewing licences must provide documentation verifying that they are residents or citizens here, or have work permits, which allow them to work.

Mr. Deane advised that entities should ensure that security agencies, private investigators and security guard licences are current when engaging their services.
