Students, entrepreneurs and businesses will be among those set to benefit from a two-day seminar entitled: Protect It or Lose It – Effective Intellectual Property Management for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), which runs from Thursday, December 6, until Friday, December 7, at the Bagnall’s Point Gallery, Pelican Village, Bridgetown beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The seminar is being hosted by the Barbados Investment & Development Corporation (BIDC), in collaboration with local partners, the Corporate Affairs & Intellectual Property Office, Conceptualisation Incorporated, and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

It will seek to demonstrate the relevance of Intellectual Property to business operations in an easy-to-understand and highly interactive manner. To do so, it is designed to provide support organisations, trainers, entrepreneurs, students and businesses with the basic knowledge and skills needed to identify, protect, exploit and manage intellectual property as part of an overall strategy to enhance business competitiveness and sustainability in domestic and international markets.

Topics to be addressed during the seminar include: The Role of Trademarks in Branding, Benefitting from your Copyright and using the Copyright Works of Others in your Business, the Importance of Trade Secret Protection and the Use of Designs to increase Competitiveness.

The approach and execution of this programme recognises that intellectual property, though referred to regularly, is still not actively considered and applied in business strategy and planning especially by SMEs.

Local participants are expected to benefit significantly from the programme as they will have an opportunity to engage in sessions with experts in all areas of trademarks, copyright, trade secrets, patents and the application in branding, licensing, franchising and other business strategies.

There will be a $50 registration fee. For further information please contact Valerie Small or Janice Forte at the BIDC Small Business Centre at 426-2300, or visit the BIDC’s website http://www.bidc.com/.
