The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management, in collaboration with the National Nutrition Centre of the Ministry of Health, has embarked on a project to develop a Food and Nutrition Security Policy and Action Plan for Barbados.

And, as part of efforts to develop such a policy they will host a half-day seminar tomorrow, Thursday, April 26, on the ???Right to Food’ at UN House, Marine Gardens, Hastings, Christ Church.

The "Right to Food’, a basic human right, will be a major pillar of the policy and the seminar will seek to expose more stakeholders to this concept.

The objectives of the Food and Nutrition Security Policy include: devising appropriate policies and legislation; creating a framework for increased and sustained domestic production of safe and nutritious food, enhanced processing, marketing, and safety and security.

It will also include the provision of adequate protection to the local agricultural sector, with a view to maintaining current levels of employment, saving foreign exchange and providing food for the population.

Furthermore, it is expected to provide capital, technical assistance and other critical resources to support domestic food production, processing and marketing capabilities. A public education programme will also be developed which will seek to bring about dietary changes in Barbadians, with the aim of leading healthier lifestyles.

Technical and financial assistance for the policy will be provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
