Issues related to safety and health in the workplace will be high on the agenda next month, when a number of free seminars are held as part of the activities to mark Occupational Health and Safety Week, which will run from Monday, July 4, to Tuesday, July 12.

Barbadians are invited to register for the sessions, which have been coordinated by the Department of Labour, in association with the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health, under the theme Safety Management Systems a Tool for Modern Business.

On Monday, July 4, after the opening ceremony, the following topics will be on the agenda: Management of Safety and Health = Good Business Sense and The Importance of Safety and Health Management Systems during Challenging Economic Times.????

The following day Tuesday, July 5, participants are expected to review Introduction to Standards for Occupational Safety and Health Management; A Guide to Attaining International Standards; Risk Management: A Safety and Health Management Tool and Safety Management Systems: The Local Perspective, Case Studies. A practical session on Guidelines to Developing a Safety Management System will also be conducted on that day.

Activities on Wednesday, July 6, will focus on Worker Participation in Safety Management Systems; Electricity, Work and Play – How Close is too Close?; Results of the Occupational Safety and Health Hospitality Blitz and Managing Occupational Safety and Health in the Hospitality Sector – Case Studies.

On Thursday, July 7, emphasis will be placed on Working at Heights – Making the Best Call.?? There will also be a site visit to selected workplaces for practical demonstrations on this topic.

Managers and other decision makers are specially invited to attend the last seminar which will be held on Tuesday, July 12.?? It will focus on the establishment of a National Safety Management System and the Deputy Director of Management Systems for Security and Health at Work in Mexico, Luis Antonio Miranda, will make presentations on health and safety best practices in Mexico.
