Members of the senate are expected to debate up to six items tomorrow, Wednesday, June 2.
Leader of Public Business, Senator Maxine McClean, will move the First Reading of the Charities (Amendment) Bill, 2010. The Bill will change the Charities Act, Cap. 243 to make provision for the categorisation of certain institutions as exempt charities.
Senator McClean is also scheduled to pilot the First Reading of the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2010. This will adjust the Income Tax Act, Cap. 73 in accordance with the Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals for 2009.
Other items on the Order Paper include the passing of a Resolution to approve the compulsory acquisition by the Crown of land at Brighton Plantation, St. George, for residential development. This is in accordance with Section Five of the Land Acquisition Act Cap. 228.
Senators are also expected to discuss the passing of a Resolution to approve the guarantee by the Government of US$ 2,750,000. The sum is one third of the total loan of US $8,250,000 from the Caribbean Development Bank to the University of the West Indies. It has been earmarked to finance the University Enhancement Project and the construction of the Vice Chancellery Building on land adjacent to the Mona Campus in Jamaica.
Also down for debate will be the First Reading of the National Insurance and Social Security (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2010 and the Second Reading of the Penal System Reform (Amendment) Bill, 2010.
Meanwhile, the Lower House is on recess for two weeks and will reconvene on June 15.??clashley@barbados.gov.bb
