Developing a closer working relationship with the business community was one of the main issues discussed last Friday when Minister of Commerce and Trade, Senator Haynesley Benn, met with officials from the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI).

Newly elected President of the BCCI, Lalu Vaswani, suggested that government and the BCCI should meet to further examine the critical issues that are impacting the business sector and to find credible solutions to these challenges.

In offering his congratulations to Mr. Vaswani on his election to the post, Senator Benn added that he was looking forward to working with him and the BCCI.

He reiterated that the cost of living remained a critical issue for government and he would continue to lobby for adjustments to be made to the basket of goods.

In addition, he revealed that the Commerce Ministry was receiving positive feedback on its published index of retail prices.

The Trade Minister observed that the price listing was creating an awareness among Barbadians, with many reporting that it helped to inform their decisions about the goods they bought.

Both parties also discussed issues related to trade, commerce, and local business development in Bridgetown.

The meeting, which was held at the Ministry of Commerce and Trade in Reef Road, was also attended by Permanent Secretary, Dr. Louis Woodroofe and Executive Director of the BCCI, Lisa Gale.
