Minister of Commerce Senator Lynette Eastmond

Minister of Commerce, Consumer Affairs and Business Development, Senator Lynette Eastmond this morning officially launched the newest organisation, which has been created to foster international business opportunities around major sporting and other international events, while promoting the business image of Barbados.

Business Club Barbados’ (BCB) launch at the Hilton, was described by the Minister as the entity that “will assist in bridging the divide of institutional capacity within the private sector. Institutional capacity has been identified as a prerequisite in improving the competitive stance of Caribbean countries”.

Senator Eastmond noted that the returns from Cricket World Cup 2007 (CWC 2007) “will also be measured by the lasting institutions, business and development culture which we are able to foster over this period of time”.

Managing Consultant, Legacy Barbados, Brenda Pope, noted that one of the BCB’s long-term goals was to work with government to create an amenable business environment, demonstrating that ‘Barbados is open for business’.

According to Ms. Pope, BCB intends to “build upon the impetus of major events to deliver long-term sustainable benefits before, during and long after the event itself”.

BCB has attracted several partners to assist with its mandate. They are the Barbados Small Business Association, Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Barbados Coalition of Service Industries, Barbados International Business Association, Ministry of Commerce, Consumer Affairs and Business Development, Barbados Investment and Development Corporation, Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, Barbados Manufacturers’ Association and Barbados International Business Promotion Corporation.

BCB is currently focusing its attention on Barbados World Cup Golf and CWC 2007.
