Students at the Industry High School are in the process of acquiring a number of skills that are "ideal in the world of work".

These sentiments were expressed by Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Senator Harry Husbands, during a familiarisation tour of the Heddings, St. Philip institution.

Senator Husbands noted that the school was currently experiencing a number of challenges, but highlighted the variety of innovative programmes, including pen making and agricultural classes, which were being undertaken to "assist current students and possibly attract more".

He cited the need for official recognition of the existing courses through either the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council or other certification bodies on the island.

"Fortunately, or unfortunately, our society holds certification in very high regard. Therefore, it will be necessary for us to certify some of these programmes…so that the children not only have the skill, but they have a certificate to offer prospective employers as further evidence of having acquired certain skills," the Parliamentary Secretary proposed.

Senator Husbands stated that there would be further discussions with the Principal of the school, Albert Joseph, to identify ways in which the Ministry could assist with the school’s development.
