The work of the Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) in assisting with the development of the country through the use of accurate statistics has come in for high praise from government.

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Senator Jepter Ince, heaped accolades on the BSS last Friday, during the department’s awards luncheon to commemorate Statistics Week and the BSS’ 55th Anniversary.?? It was held at Bagatelle Great House, St. Thomas.

Emphasising the importance of promoting the importance and greater use of Statistics, he added: "As an organisation, the Statistical Service has set for itself goals to position the department to become a leading provider of statistics in the region.?? I am proud to say that in terms of its visibility, the staff of the BSS has successfully engaged the public sector, the private sector, ministries and agencies in the last 18 months, in the execution of its duties."

Senator Ince, cognisant of the demands placed on the BSS from government, commended the organisation for conducting the Population and Housing Census, the Country Assessment of Living Conditions, the Household Budget Survey and the Labour Force Survey, in addition to other aspects of the mandate as related to strengthening the National Accounting and Constant Price Estimates, among other duties.

"None of this was possible without the dedication, discipline and the reservoir of talent that exists in the past and is present with the department today performing various tasks at the highest possible standards," he remarked.
