The 24 senior athletes who will be representing Barbados at the Huntsman World Senior Games, being held in Utah, from October 1 to 15, will leave the island this Thursday, October 1, at 7:00 a.m.??

They have been selected to participate in the Team Challenge Competition, which will involve participating in at least five sports. The seniors will compete in six disciplines – track and field, basketball, cycling, table tennis, swimming and badminton.??

For track and field, they are Janita Austin, Wendy Barrow-Smith, Veta Batson, David Craigwell, Brenda Farley, Shirley Harper, Kathy Harper-Hall, Ainsley Lovell, Gerald Rose, Glyne Sealy, Leroy Straker, Jennifer Swanston-Jones, Keith Cumberbatch and Victor Young.

The representatives selected for basketball are Richard Clarke, David Haynes, Anthony Layne, Leonard Layne and Lionel Rudder.

Greg Downie and Stephen Moore have been chosen for cycling, while Christopher Banfield, Wilmont Goddard and Carlton Sealy will represent the island in table tennis.?? Representatives for swimming and badminton will be Veta Batson and Wendy Barrow-Smith, respectively.

The contingent will be led by a management team comprising manager, Rawle Clarke; assistant manager, Stevenson Evelyn; coaches, Anthony Lovell and Colin Sealy; and therapist, Kim Prescott.

This will be the sixth year that Barbados will be competing at the Games, and Government has provided financial assistance to cover the expenses of these athletes.

Barbados won the Team Challenge Competition in 2007, with a total of 46 medals.?? Last year, although this country did not win that competition, its medal tally increased to 62 – 23 gold, 23 silver, and 16 bronze.?? Five records were also broken last year.
