A team of 20 senior athletes is slated to leave the island this Thursday, October 2, for St. George, Utah, to participate in the upcoming Huntsman World Senior Games.
The team comprises 10 females and 10 males, who will compete in the disciplines of Archery, Basketball, Cycling, Table Tennis and Track and Field.
They will be accompanied by Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Steven Blackett, as well as Team Manager, Rawle Clarke, and Assistant Manager, Anna Shepherd. Coach for the track and field athletes, Dr. June Caddle, and massage therapist, Cassandra Hinds, will also be a part of the delegation.
Barbados has been represented at the Huntsman World Senior Games annually since 2004. This participation is encouraged as part of the initiative of the Government of Barbados to assist older persons in remaining healthy and physically fit as they age, which is one way of reducing the high incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases.
Members of this year???s team are: Martha Padmore, who will compete in Archery; Lionel Rudder, Stephen Sayers, Anthony Layne, Richard Clarke and Richard Toppin, who are members of the basketball team; and Ronald Harding, who will take part in cycling events. Charles Lovell will represent the team in table tennis, while Raymond Forde and Alexine Marshall will participate in tennis.
Track and Field athletes are Ainsley Lovell, Jennifer Swanston-Jones, Shirley Harper, Kathy Harper-Hall, Angela Jackson, Patrick Bourne, Mark Norville, Arthur Lewis, Victor Young and Henderson Waltress.??Last year, the senior team participated in the same activities and netted 88 medals, including 42 gold medals, 25 silver medals and 21 bronze medals.
