September has been designated as Senior Citizens Month and is expected to be a time of education, information and entertainment.

That promise was made by Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Steven Blackett recently while speaking at a church service to mark the 34th Anniversary of the National Assistance Board (NAB) at the James Street Methodist Church, James Street, Bridgetown.

According to him, the focus throughout the month will be on celebrating the achievements and applauding the important contributions that elderly persons have made to our society.

Activities will begin on Sunday, August 31, when Director of the NAB, Charyn Wilson along with Chairman of the National Committee on Ageing, Dame Maizie Barker Welch; and President of the Alzheimer???s Association, Pamelia Brereton, will participate in a discussion on issues affecting seniors on the Voice of Barbados radio programme, Down To Brass Tacks.

On Wednesday, September 10, at 10:00 a.m., Minister Blackett will be the patron of a Seniors Cricket Match involving the Cave Hill President???s 11 and the Legends 11 at the 3Ws Oval, UWI, Cave Hill.

There will also be a production sponsored by the Ministry of Social Care and the National HIV/AIDS Commission entitled Safe today ??? Healthy Tomorrow on Saturday, September 27, at the Queens Park Steel Shed. It will feature a cast of persons aged 50 and over and is opened only to persons in that age range.

Activities will culminate on Wednesday, October 1 – International Day for the Elderly – with a lecture entitled Solutions for Active Ageing from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. at Solidarity House. Senator Professor Henry Fraser will deliver the lecture, while Minister Blackett will deliver an address at the event.
