University lecturer and historian, Dr. Marcia Burrowes, will explore the social and cultural activities of slaves in Barbados, when the Barbados Museum and Historical Society’s 2009, lecture series continues next Tuesday, March 31. The presentation, entitled, “How the Enslaved Lived: Independent Social and Cultural Activity”, will be held at Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael, starting at 8:00 p.m.

The series has already seen presentations by Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles; Professor Emeritus, Woodville Marshall, and Dr. Karl Watson, among others, on the theme, “Slavery in Barbados”.

The next lecture, “Slavery from the Ground Up: The Archaeological Evidence,” will take place on the following Tuesday, April 7, and will be presented by Dr. Thomas Loftfield.

The series concludes the following week, Tuesday, April 14, with Professor Alvin Thompson speaking on the topic, “Testing the Chains: Resistance to Slavery.”

All lectures will be held at Solidarity House, beginning at 8:00 p.m. The series is being held in conjunction with the Department of History of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.
