The importance of statistics to a country and its people will be highlighted soon, when the Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) hosts Statistics Week 2015.
Activities will begin on Sunday, October 11, with a service at the Church of the Nazarene, Collymore Rock, St. Michael, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
From Monday, October 12, there will be a display of the BSS??? publications at the main library of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus.??
Students will, therefore, get an opportunity to learn about the information available at the BSS, which could greatly assist them in their research efforts.??There will be a motivational lecture by Haynesley Griffith for staff on Tuesday, October 13, while there will be a Schools??? Awareness Programme on Wednesday, October 14, in the conference room of the Baobab Tower, Warrens, St. Michael.
Students from the Eden Lodge, Sharon and Lawrence T. Gay primary schools will visit the department at Baobab Tower at 9:00 a.m., while those from Ellerslie, Graydon Sealy, St. Leonard???s Boys??? and The Lester Vaughan secondary schools will go at 11:00 a.m. to be sensitised about the work of the department. They will learn about the importance of conducting and responding to surveys, which generate reliable statistics for the country.
Caribbean Statistics Day will be observed on Thursday, October 15, with a Health/Open Day for the public at the Baobab Tower, beginning at 9:30 a.m. There will be health checks, including cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, health displays and product sampling. Friday, October 16, will be Fun Dress and Bajan Day for the staff, while Tuesday, October 20, will be observed as World Statistics Day under the theme: Better data. Better lives.
The BSS will host a consultation for its stakeholders on Wednesday, October 21, at the Cave Hill School of Business, UWI, beginning at 9:00 a.m. They will be updated on the Modernisation Project and the National Statistical System which the BSS is currently trying to implement.
Statistics Week will climax on Saturday, October 24, with a family fun day and picnic for staff at Codrington College. World Statistics Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2010 to recognise the importance of statistics in shaping societies. Observance of the day is expected to strengthen public awareness of the important work that statisticians carry out each day.
