The accomplishments of the nation’s children will take the spotlight in May, when the Child Care Board again organises several events to celebrate young people.

This year’s theme is "Children are the Beacons of Today: Let Them Shine" and members of the public are encouraged to join in the activities.

For the entire month, there will be a ribbon drive highlighting the issue of child abuse and urging all to "stop child abuse now". The public will be asked to make a financial contribution towards the ribbons.

Additionally, the government day nurseries will open their doors from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to familiarise persons with the work done there. They will also get an opportunity to view the children’s artwork and craft of the staff.

On Friday, May 7, a number of schools will participate in "Through the Voice of a Child", a worship in song session, at the People’s Cathedral, starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8, will be observed as Children’s Sabbath, while Children’s Sunday is May 9, and churches are encouraged to incorporate the young ones in their services.

Open days will be held at the Board’s Fred Edghill Building, Cheapside, headquarters, on Tuesday, May 11, for school children, and Monday, May 17, for the public. From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., members of the public may view the pictorial display of the Board through the years, as well as receive blood pressure and blood sugar tests.

A parenting forum for men entitled, "Separation and its Impact on Men and their Children", will be held on Tuesday, May 18, at the National Union of Public Workers, beginning at 5:15 p.m.

"Who Am I: Perspectives of the Child" will be the topic of the one-day youth meeting on Wednesday, May 19, at the Barbados Workers’ Union Auditorium, Solidarity House, starting at 8:30 a.m.

A Children’s Expo will be set up at Sheraton Centre Mall on Thursday and Friday, May 20 and 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., while a Residential Exhibition will be held at Sterling Children’s Home, St. Philip, starting at 1: 00 p.m.

On Friday, May 28, there will be a sports and fun day for all government day nurseries, at Queen’s Park, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

A Family Fun Day and Picnic at King George V Memorial Park, as well as a public awareness concert, at Solidarity House, on Saturday, May 29, will bring the curtain down on the activities.
