The importance of statistics to a country and its people will soon be highlighted when the Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) hosts Statistics Week.

Improving the Lives of People – Advancing the Action Plan for Statistics in CARICOM, is the theme of the week, which starts on Caribbean Statistics Day on Sunday, October 15, with a service at the Better Life Assembly, Station Hill, St. Michael, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Members of the public are invited to the Health Day in the Warrens Meeting Room, Baobab Tower, Warrens, St. Michael, on Monday, October 16. Presentations will be given by pharmacists Andre Conliffe at 10:00 a.m. and Adrian Forde at 2:00 p.m., while there will be free health checks and product sampling during the day.

There will be a presentation for children featuring the Social and Demographic Statistics Division, which oversees the Continuous Labour Force Surveys, tourism arrivals, as well as birth, death and marriage rates in Barbados, on Wednesday, October 18, in the Warrens Meeting Room, at 10:00 a.m.

Approximately 120 students from Ellerslie, Graydon Sealy, St. Leonard’s Boys, Queen’s College, Alexandra, Parkinson Memorial, and The Lester Vaughan Secondary Schools, as well as the Barbados Youth Service, will be in attendance. They will learn about the work of the BSS and the importance of conducting and responding to surveys, which generate reliable statistics for the country.

On Thursday, October 19, there will be an Employee Assistance Programme Workshop on Avoiding Burnout and Increasing Motivation, for the staff of the BSS, while a panel discussion is scheduled for Friday, October 20.

Caribbean Statistics Day was introduced in 2008 to help people in the region understand the importance of statistics in shaping their societies.
