When the International Transport Division’s Maritime Week career showcase comes off tomorrow, Friday, September 25, at the Barbados Coast Guard’s headquarters, at Spring Garden, on-site recruitment will be offered through both public and private sector entities.

According to Deputy Chief Technical Officer, Jacqueline Blackman, representatives of the National Employment Bureau and Phoenix Shipping Services, will be available to meet with job seekers to share information pertaining to numerous available openings.

The company will be recruiting several persons to work in various categories on the Norwegian Cruise Lines.

There are positions for seven?? 2nd engineers; eight able bodied seamen;?? six?? fitters; three bosuns (responsible for ship and equipment maintenance, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, NULL, NULL, 0); three chef?? cooks; six 3rd engineers; four 4th engineers; three chief mates; and three chief electricians on cargo ships.

Certification and licences are needed for the respective cargo ship positions, including Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) 95. In addition, candidates must have served no less than two years in that position onboard ocean going vessels.

In terms of cruise ships, vacancies exist for ten waiters and waitresses; six bartenders; six plumbers; seven electricians; eight welders; eight deck boys and eight engine boys.

Wait staff, including bartenders, must have at least three years hotel or restaurant experience; while plumbers, electricians and welders should to be certified. While City & Guilds certification is preferred, solid qualifications from other training institutions will be considered.?? The positions for deck and engine boys are at entry -level.

Meanwhile, the National Employment Bureau has announced several positions within the Canadian hotel sector.

Openings currently exist for laundry attendants, stewards, room attendants, food and beverage servers, cooks, golf course workers and guest service attendants. Applicants must be 18 to 55 years old, and have at least one year’s experience within the hotel sector.

Applications should be typed to include a resume or curriculum vitae, copies of qualifications (certificates or diplomas in hotel industry), two signed job references (complete with letterheads, addresses and telephone numbers), four passport-sized photographs and an unblemished police certificate of character ( no prior convictions or cases presently before the courts).
