Construction of the Hyatt Hotel in Bridgetown is expected to start early next year.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley intimated this on Saturday evening during the official opening ceremony of Golden Square Freedom Park, where she indicated also that the Pierhead Project is anticipated to start.

Ms. Motley told her audience: “And, the other works that are already out to tender for the Treasury Building, which we believe must be that place where young Barbadians and not so young Barbadians can take to living in the centre of town, so that we can bring back life to Bridgetown fully, across all classes.”

She said an Urban Transformation Fund would be established where money would be channelled from all who receive planning approvals for major projects in Bridgetown. These funds will be used to enhance the surrounding communities.

The Prime Minister highlighted some of the transformative work being done in Bridgetown, including the Constitution River, where the area is being beautified and small boats would be able to sail nearly up to Queen’s Park.

She also spoke about the 100 stalls which were completed for the Fairchild Street vendors and the work being done at Murphy Pasture.

“The work in Temple Yard started and will be completed, and were it not for COVID we would be much further ahead,” she said, adding that work would also be done at the corner of Baxters Road, and in Queen’s Park, which must become the centre of cultural activity and creativity for all people in this country.

Ms. Mottley continued: “And this Government [has] determined that…we must see and hear people, we must care.  And that is why I remain resolute that the things that we can do, even in the middle of an IMF programme, must be centred around building up and uplifting our people and giving them the best possible chance even when things get hard.”

She restated that the National Cultural Foundation must be relocated to the centre of Bridgetown, so it could fully open up opportunities for young people.  She also reiterated that the nearby bus terminal would be renamed after Archbishop Granville Williams.
